Artists We Love: Jacky Marshall

Once upon a time, Sofia stumbled upon a fabulous fashion illustration of a sweet-faced girl with bold swipes of blue eyeshadow, created by a talented fashion designer turned illustrator… and it was love! Enter: the accomplished Jacky Marshall, also known as JackyBlue.

After years of  following (and a few art purchases) Sofia knew she wanted to collaborate with Jacky in some way, someday. So as the Everyday Gold Bands were being developed, it only seemed right to add an artful element and JackyBlue came right to mind.

We sent the first ring samples of the EGB collection off to her in New York City and let her work her magic. Needless to say… they really are magic. We chose six illustrations (well, we originally tried to narrow it to three… NOPE!) from the dozens she sent over and couldn’t be more excited with the way she’s given life to these rings.

Keep reading on for JackyBlue’s journey in fashion and illustration, how she defines her style, her thoughts on her work for the EGB collection and more!

Jacky, you’ve had a fascinating background in the world of high fashion design. Was fashion illustration always a part of your design process? How has your work evolved over the years?

Fashion illustration has always been a part of my design process. After going to art school for fashion design, I was lucky enough to work with a number of very creative fashion houses. These allowed me the opportunity to continue drawing. Illustration for me has always been a part of the fashion process as you are always thinking about creating a mood through silhouettes and proportions.

My work has stayed pretty consistent through the years. I was encouraged to draw as a very young child. Some of my childhood drawings still exist and I must say my style has not evolved very much! The lines and colour choices I used as a child are similar to the style I currently use. Personally, I love this as I think the drawings we make as children are the most honest and beautiful.

As you know, we are enamored with your unique style. How do you personally define your style and what motivates your work?

I think of my style as loose, linear and sometimes colorful. I try to have a lot of variety in my work. In addition to drawing, I also enjoy photography, collaging, screen printing, etc. Often times, one thing leading to another when working and the mediums crossover. I am often inspired to use different materials when working, whether that is pen and paper when interpreting a beautiful fashion collection, or fabrics and markers for my life drawings. For me it is different every time and motivated completely by whatever I am inspired in the moment.

What advice would you give to a young artist who is trying to find their own artistic voice?

My advice would be to create as much work as possible and explore all avenues that interest you in art. If that means taking time each day (even for a small amount of time) to draw, paint, photograph, etc. — just do it. For me, the way I found my voice was through constantly being creative through one of my many artistic interests.

We are so honored to have your illustrations as part of our Everyday Gold Band campaign. Seeing how you depicted our rings makes us giddy! What does your creative process look like? Do you typically start with a vision or just let your hands guide you?

Thank you! I loved making these drawings for you. It is a bit of both vision and hand. I typically have a faint image tucked away in my mind, but once I begin a project, I tend to let my hand guide me to the final product. For your Everyday Gold Bands, I started with my favorite Sennelier paper, which I find works really well with my inky lines. Then like all other projects, I put on headphones, picked some motivating music, and began to draw.

Sofia actually found you via Instagram years ago. How do you feel Instagram has affected your work?

I enjoy posting on Instagram, because I can curate my page and feed to reflect the vision of how I see my creations interacting. It is almost like having my own magazine. As I post, I always take into consideration how all my work looks together on my feed. I really enjoy playing around with images and colors. I would say Instagram has had the biggest effect on my work in that it has allowed people to be able to see my work whom otherwise would not have had access – which I find amazing. I also love how Instagram has connected me with people that I would have “met” otherwise.

JackyBlue: artist, designer, and incredible fashion illustrator by day… How do you spend your free time?

I live in NYC, so I like to spend time being outside around the city. Since I have to walk my two dogs a few times each day, I enjoy going for a coffee with them to people watch. I also love watching TV as it really helps quiet my mind. I usually use tv time to draw. I find it helps loosen up my work to be slightly distracted.

Finally, where do you see your creative energy going next? Do you have any fun projects in the works that you can share about?

I always have multiple projects going on at once, whether personal or professional. I recently made a zine combining my photography with collages and drawings. It is being sold exclusively at Dashwood Books in NYC. I really loved working on that and plan to work on more zines in the future. After the shelter in place order was lifted and I was able to get back into the screen-printing studio, I decided to take the pages apart and screen print some of my favorite drawings over the photographs. The process is quite time consuming and a lot of hard work physically, but I love it and am very happy so far with how the pages look. It changes every time I am at the studio and I could see this going on for years to come!

ALEXANDRA + CHRIS’S STORY

Every love story is unique and that is why we have so much fun sharing these SK Love Stories with you. This week we are featuring a young, full-of-life couple that has a conventional (or non-conventional, depending on the generation you’re asking!) meeting story, a proposal that involved a short minute of panic (when don’t they?!) and clearly a ton of love for each other. Please meet Alex and Chris.

Names: Alexandra Hamb and Chris Frederick

Current location: San Diego, California

Meeting date + location: June 2016, New Orleans

Wedding date + location: Spring 2022, New Orleans

How did you meet?

Chris: Tale as old as time itself, Tinder.

Alex: Also a big thank you to my friend Lauren who was visiting me at the time and had temporary control of my dating apps. Our first date was about a week or so later at a neighborhood bar and the rest is history!

The proposal – please tell us the story!

Alex: I’ll let Chris tell the story since it was a complete surprise to me!

Chris: I bought the ring during early pandemic days and kept it secret in the house for 6 months waiting for the right moment. When we finally had time to take a vacation together we went on a road trip up to Big Sur. I hired a photographer who suggested this off the beaten path cliffside without any cell reception so we had to meet up with ‘what are you wearing’ type of stuff.  I pulled off on the side of the road in this area I thought he had described and saw this guy with sunglasses who gave me a peace sign and knew we were in the right place. I had envisioned Alex turning away from me so I could pull out the ring and get down on my knee without her realizing. I told her “hey let me take a pic of you looking out at the ocean” but she thought that was silly and refused so I kind of panicked and couldn’t figure out a way for her to look away from me for a couple minutes. The photographer later told me he was very confused about what was going on.

Alex: I feel so bad now for being so difficult in not wanting to turn around! I thought you wanted to watch the sunset… Anyway, it was absolutely perfect and it meant a lot to me that Chris had put so much thought into making the moment special.

When did you know that your significant other was the one?

Alex: Chris and I went back to my hometown for one of my best friend’s weddings. Since I was in the bridal party I was pretty busy with pre-wedding and wedding day festivities which meant Chris was hanging out with my family for most of the trip. Everyone loved him and they got along great; he’s so easy-going and likable I wouldn’t have expected anything less but seeing him fit in with my family so effortlessly helped me see a future together.

Chris: One of our first trips together was a weekend trip to an overnight trek on the Appalachian trail. We drove about 10 hours to get there, and when we finally arrive it’s misty and rainy and we can’t find the freaking trailhead. We wandered in circles for at least an hour looking for where to start. That whole first day of trekking was just miserable weather and lots of uncertainty about where we were going. Not exactly what we had envisioned for our vacation, but Alex was so cool about the whole thing. Like not fazed at all and still laughing, joking, and having a good time. I already thought Alex was one of the coolest girls I’d ever met, but that trip convinced me that she was the one.

What is your favorite thing about your significant other?

Alex: Many things! His goofiness, willingness to try new things. Can always make me laugh and immediately brighten my day. Great travel partner and always down to play ’20 Questions’ on long trips.

Chris: Too difficult to name just one. Incredible cook. Makes me laugh every day. Starts impromptu dance parties and tolerates my very questionable moves.

What has COVID taught you about each other/relationships? Did you learn anything about your SO?

Alex: I realized what a great partner Chris is. He was my safe haven in all the uncertainty. It actually gave us more time to spend together just the two of us and brought us closer together.

Chris: It taught me how important she was to me. The first month of quarantine I was working from home, that’s when I started looking at rings and really started thinking about what was important in life.

Do you have any notable stories that have stood out over the years – hilarious, sentimental, anything!

Alex: Early on, we went camping together and Chris forgot his sleeping bag and pillow after making quite a big deal about me having mine. It was freezing and we had to share this tiny pillow and a sleeping bag, zero rest – it was terrible in the moment but now we can laugh about it. One of my favorite memories is from my graduation. I really wanted to have an all-night celebration and while most people called it quits around 2AM, we stayed up all night going to dive bars and then ended it at the Mississippi River levee watching the sunrise.

What’s your favorite go-to date night idea? Pre or post quarantine!

Alex: Chris actually got me this very cool projector screen for my birthday a few years ago so probably movie night at home plus our favorite neighborhood Thai takeout and some wine.

Chris: Picnics at our local park or watching the sunset from our street corner that has incredible views of downtown San Diego.

Let’s talk jewels – how did you choose this ring?!

Alex: So, I guess that I should preface this with the fact that we never looked at engagement rings together much less talked about them. One of my good friends was actually ring shopping at the time with her then-boyfriend (they got engaged the same week as we did!) so I was helping her look around for styles and I came across Sofia Kaman on Instagram and fell immediately in love. I remember saving the exact ring setting Chris ended up choosing for future conversations knowing that it was my absolute dream ring.

Chris: I don’t know the first thing about rings; didn’t know engagement and wedding rings were different things. With some help from Alex’s sister and friend, I spent forever looking at rings and saw the Sofia Kaman one and knew it was the one. The setting was elegant and beautiful. I bought the stone from a friend’s family and then had it set at Sofia Kaman.

What are you most excited about for your wedding?

Chris: We’re getting married in New Orleans, my favorite city in the world. It’s where most of my family is from, where I went to college and medical school, and where I met Alex. Most of my college and med school friends are scattered around the country, and especially with COVID I haven’t seen my family in forever so I cannot wait for the wedding to just be one huge reunion party.

Are you going to honeymoon?

Alex: Yes, definitely! Traveling is one of our favorite things to do together. We probably won’t take a trip right after the wedding but hopefully sometime soon after.

Alright – so what’s next for the two of you?!

Alex: We just adopted a cat, his name is Snarf, and we are trying to be the best new cat owners we can.

Finally, if you could add any piece to your SKFJ collection, which one would it be?

Alex: I am thrilled that my engagement ring is my first piece of Sofia Kaman jewelry and I would love to get my wedding band from SKFJ as well. I also think the ‘Spear’ earrings are stunning.

How did you meet?

At a mutual friend’s birthday party in downtown Los Angeles. We were both on the dance floor, as we tend to be. We locked eyes, exchanged names, and ran our separate ways because Mary was in a relationship. Over the next 2 years, we serendipitously ran into each other multiple times before Mary asked Daisy on our first date in 2018 to a seafood restaurant in Beverly Hills. We’ve been inseparable ever since.

The proposal – please tell us the story!

Mary secretly held a family meeting to ask for Daisy’s parent’s blessing. She sought the help of Daisy’s closest girlfriends to take her ring shopping. Daisy still thinks she just went to Happy Hour for a girl’s night. LOL. Then COVID hit and all proposal plans were ruined. But Mary don’t quit! She planned a surprise proposal at a private home in Palm Springs, camouflaged by the fact it was also Mary’s birthday. After Daisy made Mary birthday dinner, Daisy was escorted to a hot tub and pool filled with flowers and candles Mary had set up while Daisy was cooking. The first time we kissed was at a hot tub in Palm Springs for Krave weekend. What better way to tie the knot than to return to our first intimate moment? Daisy’s siblings joined for brunch the next morning, and our friends joined the next day for a pool party and engagement celebration….masked up and 6 feet apart, of course ;).

When did you know that your significant other was the one?

Mary: She picked me up from the airport in the middle of rush hour, with snacks, beverages, and not one, but two succulents. My love language is Acts of Service, so I knew Daisy was the ONE!

Daisy: The first time she cooked a meal for us. Mary is Italian, so she likes garlic and onion. She didn’t know I was allergic to garlic and onion, but I still ate every bite. She also messed up the gnocchi we made from scratch, but I knew by watching her cook how much she put love into food and every recipe. And we all need food to survive, so I knew I could survive with her FOREVER.

What is your favorite thing about your significant other?

Mary: Oh that’s hard, I love everything about Daisy. My top three things are:

  1. She is the kindest, most understanding and non-judgmental person I’ve ever met.
  2. I’m forever grateful for her introducing me to gospel music, because it led me to God.
  3. Daisy puts up a front that she is sooo tough, but really she’s a big kid inside. I love to hear her laugh! She lights up a room!

Daisy: Well, there are so many things I love about Mary. Let’s start with ALL the things, LOL jk.

  1. She is smart, generous, funny, beautiful, and I love the way she looks in the morning when she doesn’t know I’m creepily watching her sleep. She’s so peaceful and gorgeous, and I love to pray over her.
  2. She is a chef!! Like, seriously, better than most restaurants and has mastered coming up with recipes for my garlic and onion allergy, which most people can’t even comprehend.
  3. Mary keeps me motivated through tough days and always knows what to say to lift my spirits when I’m having doubts. She’s my most favorite person, best friend and confidant. We make a great team!

What has COVID taught you about each other/relationships? Did you learn anything about your SO?

Mary: We moved in together a week before COVID hit, not leaving a lot of room for personal space. We have learned to respect each other’s boundaries. We have learned what NOT to say. And we’ve found the beauty of creating a home together, rather than the frenzy of our former social butterfly lives.

Daisy: Mary and I were scared like many during the height of the pandemic. She wanted to do everything to keep us safe from being exposed, and had me at home like Rapunzel, LOL jk! But that is what I love about her. She goes the extra mile and puts herself in harm’s way just to keep me safe. Our communication has also been challenging, but we are growing closer and learning how to trust, love, and show compassion to each other through these unprecedented times.

Do you have any notable stories that have stood out over the years – hilarious, sentimental, anything!

We plead the 5th, JK!

Mary is a trouble maker, Daisy is conservative. Which makes for pretty interesting adventures. Daisy has been flown off a jet ski. Mary has been stung by a jellyfish. In 2019 we went on 7 trips. In 2020 we got so antsy, we only went on one and fled to Mexico (Puerto Vallarta) where Mary was driving an ATV at 60 miles per hour, on a highway, standing up, to take pictures. Meanwhile, Daisy was freaking out behind her and almost crashed. Mary cooks birthday dinner for every single person in Daisy’s family, and there’s a ton of them. Daisy has flown to the east coast to grow closer with Mary’s family, and there’s a lot of them, too. Above all, we cherish adventure and time with loved ones.

What’s your favorite go-to date night idea? Pre or post quarantine!

Pre-COVID, the K-Spa was our spot! We can’t wait to go back and spend the whole day there.

During quarantine, we’ve gotten real good at Texas Hold Em’ using our piggy bank as the money bag. Otherwise, cheese plates, movies, homemade pizza Fridays, fancy homecooked meals, and a whole lotta wine.

Let’s talk jewels – how did you choose this ring?!

Mary is really non-traditional and prefers a band, rather than the typical engagement ring. She googled non-traditional artists in LA, and fell in love with Sofia’s style the moment we walked in for a private viewing of her ring collection. Daisy surprised Mary with a visit to SK for her birthday weekend. Little did Daisy know, Mary had already bought Daisy’s ring and was planning to propose the next day.

Wedding bells! How is wedding planning going?

What wedding? It’s COVID, you should know better! In all seriousness, we’re really excited and planning to elope. But, once it’s safe to return to in-person gatherings, we’re having a HUGE mask-free gathering of family and friends in Los Angeles.

What are you most excited about for your wedding?

Buying dope suits, throwing the best party of our lives, and having a photographer capture it all because we never have our phones ready to take pictures.

Are you going to honeymoon?

Duh! 5-star room over the ocean, please. We don’t mind a 24-hour plane ride somewhere in the Pacific… Maldives, or all things majestic.

Alright – so what’s next for the two of you?!

We plan on living our best lives in our newly purchased condo. We have some renovations to schedule, so Mary has a million Home Depot trips in her future. As for Daisy, she will simply try to keep the plants alive. We’re really excited to start a family, too!

Unique Engagement Rings

Finally, if you could add any piece to your SKFJ collection, which one would it be?

Ooooooh, there’s so many!! We both love the Black Lives Matter tribute ring, and would buy everything in that collection. Mary loves anything stackable, and Daisy love’s all the antiques and heirlooms.

FAVORITE UNIQUE ENGAGEMENT RING: BILLIE

billie unique engagement ring

Billie Jean is not my lover.

But Billie is.

Please allow us to introduce our latest obsession-er-we mean Bridal Collection… the Billie, who’s so good she doesn’t even need a last name. If you look up “show stopper” in the dictionary, you may find a photo of this design. She’s modern, sophisticated, glitzy, and looks good from every angle.

Designed to showcase a one-of-a-kind center stone, the Billie offers a minimal yet detailed look, with its four-prong design, hidden halo and “floating” diamond setting.

billie unique engagement ring

A star is born.

The Billie was born after seeing a vintage design that showcased a “floating” diamond with the open culet of the juicy Old European set to rest directly on a hand in a completely open setting. Chic. We couldn’t help ourselves but recreate this idea with a modern twist, AKA a row of twinkling diamonds on a hidden halo.

While we tried to stop at just one, we just couldn’t help ourselves so we dipped into the Diamond Vault and pulled out a few more extra special stones that we’ve been holding onto until we found the perfect design for them… And that’s where Billie with a Marquise came in… And then this Billie with a Marquise… with more to come.

This unique engagement ring design is truly not for the faint of heart and is made for a glam-loving woman that isn’t afraid to show off! We can’t wait to see whose fingers they land on… and then we will just have to replenish! 😉

You can shop the Billie Collection here.

Favorite Unique Engagement Ring: Two Stone Pear Ring

Three-Stone, who?

Indeed you’ve heard of a three-stone ring (especially if you saw our Claudette Three Stone Ring blog post), but what about a two-stone? It might not be three, but does that mean we should neglect them?… Well, we have news: they are no longer ancient history. Two stone rings have a huge past, but they are very much in-the-now with a very bright future.

A Lesson in History

The one of the first iconic two-stone rings originated in 1776 when a young 26-year-old Napoleon presented his partner Josephine with a two-stone ring. It had one diamond and one sapphire. These unique engagement rings are thought to represent the union of two souls intertwined. Fast forward to current times when Emily Ratajkowski made her engagement known with an eye-popping two-stone ring featuring a princess cut and a pear diamond that everyone was gushing over. And we can’t forget Jackie-O and her emerald and diamond two-stone ring from Mr. Kennedy!

Napoleon and Josephine Toi et Moi Ring

Now that we have your attention…

If we’ve piqued your interest for something more unique and offbeat, a two-stone ring might be the ring for you. These engagement rings provide hefty finger coverage and the best part is you don’t have to settle for just one shape. If you can’t decide between that gorgeous pear but you also love the look of a round, not to fret. Can’t decide between a gemstone and a diamond? Don’t even stress – just combine them! A diamond and a green emerald, blue sapphire, red ruby, or any other precious gemstone and you have a winning combination. Pair any two stones you like and what do you have? A unique engagement ring that is 100% you.

The two stone ring style is known in French as a “Toi et Moi” ring, or “You and Me” as we would understand it. Okay, okay… we’re hopeless romantics at heart! And if you aren’t drooling over the idea of a two-stone ring yet… drum roll, please! Meet the Toi et Moi Ring, our latest and greatest. We have been ridiculously excited to release this ring, as it happens to be an absolute favorite to date. It’s a bit different than our “usual,” but needless to say: we are obsessed.

We hope you enjoyed learning a bit about two-stone rings and maybe even have you considering one for yourself! If this is the case, you can always book a virtual or in-person appointment at our sunny Santa Monica showroom!
