November Birthstone - Topaz Crystal

Topaz either got its name from the Greek word topazion meaning fire or it might have been named after the Egyptian Island of Topazos, now called St. Johns Island in the Red Sea where it was thought to have originated. Later it was discovered that the stone was probably chrysolite and not topaz.

Topaz is a silicate mineral of aluminium and fluorine. It is one of the hardest naturally occurring mineral and comes in a wide variety of colors and transparencies. Topaz in its natural state is a golden brown to yellow, and often confused with citrine, which is a less valuable gemstone. There are a variety of treatments and impurities that give the topaz its different colors. The pink and red varieties come from chromium replacing aluminum in its structure.
