Choosing a Colored Gemstone for Your Unique Engagement Ring!

So, you’ve decided you want to go a different route than a traditional diamond for your unique engagement ring. Maybe you’re craving something ultra-unique, you want to represent you or your partner’s birthstone or maybe you just really love color and were meant to wear the rainbow! Whatever the case may be, gemstones exist in a wide variety and there is one to represent nearly every color across the spectrum. Here is a guide explaining the main factors that go into selecting a gemstone to help navigate the best stone choice for you based on style, practicality, and more.

SHOW ME COLOR

Gemstones are often chosen over the go-to diamond due to their vibrant colors, so the first order of business is determining what colors and hues you love, like and don’t like, and what stones are available in those colors. There are quite a handful of stones out there that offer a multitude of color options, like sapphires! Some other gemstone options that are often mega-saturated and emulate the colors of the rainbow are rubies, emeralds, spinel, and tourmaline.

BIRTHDAY SUIT

Not everyone gets the diamond for their birthstone, and that is just fine by us! Birthstones are a fun way to add sentiment to your own unique engagement ring. Represent your partner, a family member, or your own birthstone for a meaningful or playful touch or make said birthstone front and center, showing off her color as a statement-making solitaire. Unsure of what your birthstone is? Find out here, along with the history behind it!

GIA MOHS Ranking

DURABILITY

Selecting a gemstone as opposed to a diamond comes with a bit more responsibility, as diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring mineral on earth and all gemstones fall behind that. This does not mean you need to rule out a gemstone for your special ring but we recommend choosing wisely based on how you wear your ring.

On the MOHS Ranking scale, Corundum (sapphires and rubies) ranks a 9 coming right after diamonds (a 10 on the scale), making them essentially wearable without stress. After that comes Topaz and Quartz (ranking 7 and 8) which are also durable enough for a lifetime of happiness on your finger, provided that proper care is taken of the stones. This means no extreme sports while wearing, please! 😉 After these gemstones, they get softer and more susceptible to scratches or other damage and wouldn’t be recommended for an everyday engagement ring.

We are always here to chat about specific stones and are happy to guide you in terms of safety and wear! Contact us at any time for more info on what’s a safe option for your unique engagement ring!

Brown and Champagne Zircon

PUT IT IN NEUTRAL

If bright colors don’t tickle your fancy, not to fret. There are a plethora of gemstones that come in neutral colors like off-whites, beiges, tans, champagnes, and greys! Brown Zircon is a fabulous example of a way to get the neutral look of lighter stone while still honoring your desire for a gemstone. Zircon (shown above) comes in a wide variety of colors including red, green and blues, but also in much lighter and more pale versions as well.

And if you decide to come back to the dark side… Champagne diamonds and salt and pepper diamonds are always here… 😉

COLOR PALETTE (WEAR THE RAINBOW)

Now for the fun part… The mixing, matching, pairing, and designing of the colors of your chosen stones! Because who says you can only have one? Get creative and play with color! Love the rainbow? Go with an arrangement of multi-colored stones. Obsessed with one color in particular? Try an ombré effect from light to dark, like this Three Stone Pink Sapphire Claudette Ring! Can you imagine this in blues, greens or purple? Because we certainly can!

EMMA + ANDREW’S STORY

Last but certainly not least… Meet Emma and Andrew, this week’s SK Love Story feature and our last feature of the month of looove! Ever since meeting the new old-fashioned way (thank the heavens for modern technology!), these two were inseparable. We had the privilege and honor of creating a very special ring to match their unique love story. Read on for Emma and Andrew’s sweet journey to the alter, and beyond!

Names: Emma and Andrew Lovitt

Current Location: Chicago

Meeting Date & Location: Bumble

Wedding Date & Location: 12.04.21 in Chicago at The Publishing House

So! How did you lovebirds meet?

Emma: We connected on Bumble and chatted via text and an occasional phone call for almost 2 months before actually meeting in person. Our first real date was at The Birds Nest in Lincoln Park. We were there for almost 4 hours sharing pitchers of Coors Light and wings. It was super chill and no pressure at all. It felt like we had known each other our entire lives. We ended up finding out we had A LOT in common like my dad and his mom growing up about 3 blocks away from one another in Arlington Heights. Once we met in person that was it. We both felt an overwhelming connection to each other and neither of us wanted to go home.

The proposal… Tell us the story!

Andrew: I proposed on the 23rd of December strategically right before another holiday with our families. I had the ring for a couple of months and felt like the 23rd was the perfect night to do it. Emma and I typically do something special together the night before Christmas Eve so we have time to ourselves before all of the family craziness. She expressed wanting a low-key and at-home proposal, so that was easy to accommodate. I sat her down in our family room and told her how much she means to me and how much I love her, how she changed my life and is the most wonderful person I know, and of course that I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with her. She was so mesmerized by the ring that I think she forgot to say yes, but she said “I do” on our wedding day so I think we’re good.

What is your favorite thing about each other?

Emma: Andrew is the whole package. I love that he challenges me and has the same interests. He’s my best friend and we love doing everything together. He makes the best cocktails and does everything the right way. I can truly count on him for anything and life is so exciting with him by my side.

Andrew: Emma is the kindest and funniest person I know. She keeps me laughing with her humourous and smart outlook on life. She’s dependable and loyal and I’m so lucky I get to spend my life with her.

How did you know your partner was the one

Emma: I knew shortly after we met. I never wanted to leave when we were together and when we were apart, I couldn’t wait to see him again. I still feel that way.

Andrew: I knew the first time we met. I had never met anyone like Emma before and I knew she was someone special.

How did you choose your ring bling!?

Emma: I’m obsessed with Sofia Kaman so I knew I wanted her to make my ring. Her organic and whimsical designs were exactly what I was looking for. We got engaged in the era of the oval diamond so picking something other than oval was important to me. I ended up choosing the most gorgeous Asscher cut stone set in an NSEW setting. It’s stunning.

Andrew: Emma did all the hard work here. I wanted her to have exactly what she wanted and I had no idea where to begin.

Do you have any advice for ring shopping?!

Emma: Go with your gut. I didn’t pick the “trendiest” ring but I’m so happy with what I chose. The most important thing is that you love it.

Andrew: Let your partner pick exactly what they want. Emma didn’t want the ring to be a surprise, she had a clear vision of what she wanted so she handled that part of it. Sofia reached out when all of the details were squared away to move forward with the next steps.

If you could add anything to your SK collection, what would it be?

Emma: The Mystic Opal Ring is to die for.

Two words: the wedding! How was your experience?

Emma: We had a relatively small, cozy winter wedding with about 60 people this past December. We rented out The Publishing House in Chicago for two nights and had our aunts, uncles, siblings and parents stay with us there. Our ceremony was across the street at The Hyatt House rooftop. Very risky having an outdoor ceremony in December, but it was 42 degrees and the most magical sunset you could imagine. It was perfect.

Boka Catering Group showed up with the most amazing surf and turf stations and incredible passed apps. Instead of signature cocktails, we had our favorite selection of booze including Blue Label and Veuve. Toni Patisserie in Hinsdale did our delicious Italian buttermilk cream cake. After speeches and food at The Publishing House, we rented several stretch Escalade Limos to limo everyone to a secret location for an epic house party. We had a DJ, Portillo’s hot dogs and beef, an open bar and balloons everywhere from Luft Balloons. The whole day was incredible and props to our amazing coordinator, Jen, who pulled it all off.

Andrew: Emma did everything – I owe all the credit to her. It was the best weekend of our lives.

Alright, what is next for you two?!

We’re just so happy to be married! It feels great and we look forward to what’s next. We still need to plan our honeymoon which we’re thinking of doing in the fall. 2-weeks in Italy! We want to have kids eventually but right now we’re just loving our life as a married couple. It’s bliss!

RACHAEL + CHELSEY’S STORY

From sneaky custom engagement rings to starting a beautiful family, Rachael and Chelsey are no strangers to the SK family. This week we’re featuring this endearing and kind couple that we have had the pleasure of not only working with but also getting to know as the years have gone on.

We are honored to be a part of their special story, not only from the beginning of a beautiful chapter (hello, wedding rings!) but to continue to be a part of their journey for important life events as they come (like babies!!). Read on for Rachael and Chelsey’s tale of love.

Names: Chelsey Bawot & Rachael Caine

Current location:  Los Angeles

Wedding date + location: Eastern Shore, MD September 10, 2016

How did you lovebirds meet?: College! Mutual friends introduced us at a party at Rachael’s house in October of 2005.

The proposal – please tell us the story!:

The day before Chelsey proposed she took Rach on an epic LA adventure to celebrate their dating anniversary – hikes and wine and presents and an amazing dinner out. The next morning, she woke Rach up with an unusual amount of morning enthusiasm. Over breakfast she said, I have one more present and slid across the table a book of photos of their 8 years together, the last page was a note that said “Will you marry me” and then placed the STUNNING ring in front of Rachael. The rest was history! (And the beginning of many more Sofia rings.)

When did you know that your significant other was the one?:

Rach knew Chels was the one on a wine trip with friends up in Napa. The day was just too good, and we had been through so much. Just being together, driving through vineyards she knew she wanted to be by Chelsey’s side forever.

Chelsey knew when they had been dating long distance for a while (and it wasn’t easy). Chels was in LA, Rach was in SF and Chelsey thought if they really want to give this relationship a fair chance they needed to live in the same city. So she moved to SF, blowing Rachael’s mind. As soon as that decision was made, Chelsey knew she wanted to be with Rach forever.

What is your favorite thing about your significant other?:

Rachael: So hard to pick one! Chelsey is unconditionally loving in the most beautiful way.

Chelsey: Rachael is the world’s greatest hype-woman. Anything from encouraging friends about their careers to telling me how amazing the dinner I cooked was – it is uncanny how effortlessly she can make someone feel good about something.

What has COVID taught you about each other/relationships? Did you learn anything about your SO?

We were actually shocked at how much we loved spending so much time together. Rach was pregnant during COVID so, at a time when things were heightened with all the challenges, we were genuinely surprised to learn how much we loved doing the basics of the day-to-day together, over and over and over again. Cooking meals, watching movies, swimming outside, going for walks, managing the challenges of pregnancy and isolation, we really loved being a team.

Rachael, Chelsey and their twins!

What’s your go-to date night idea?:

Pre-covid our go-to date was going to the Largo (in LA) to see music or a comedy show. These days it’s a walk on the beach or dinner outside.

Let’s talk jewels – how did you choose your ring(s)?! Did you pick it/them out/design it together or separately? Do you looove? Give us all the deets.

Chelsey walked into Sofia’s store when it was still on Abbot Kinney and immediately fell in love with Sofia’s jewelry and her energy. Over the course of many months she made up lots of fake reasons why she was leaving the house, and a fake email address that Rach didn’t know about so she could secretly design an engagement ring with Sofia. It was hands down the best experience she’d ever had when it came to any jewelry. (I would also like to mention that Chelsey has never really cared about jewelry so much, and she LOVED going through the design process with Sofia; she was so patient and thoughtful and taught her a ton about diamonds along the way). After Rach got her ring and listened to Chelsey talk all about her experience, she went to Sofia to design an engagement ring for Chelsey, and then we went back together to design our wedding rings.

Rachael’s custom Emerald Cut engagement ring and accompanying rings: Stardust Three Baguette RingClaudette Emerald Cut Band.

Chelsey’s custom bands.

We know you both are not strangers to the world of SK – what other pieces have you collected throughout the years on this love story journey? Did they signify any special times in your lives?

We have gotten our engagement rings, wedding rings, and when Rach had our twins we got her a Stardust Three Baguette Ring and I added an additional diamond triangle to my Cracked Band to signify the twins 😉

What was your wedding like? What did you love the most about your wedding

Our wedding was the best! It was outside, on the water, with all of our favorite people and ended with an epic (very sweaty) dance party that we talk about to this day.

Alright – so what does the future hold for the two of you?!

We had two beautiful twin daughters in 2021 – they are silly and fun and just the most spectacular thing we’ve done together yet. So hopefully the future holds a fridge proudly displaying masterful pre-school finger paintings and Saturday mornings booked with soccer games so early we’ll have forgotten they even happened.

Rachael and a sweet Sloane while paying a visit to the SK showroom!

Finally, if you could add any piece to your SKFJ collection, which one would it be?

For Rach, her eyes are always on the rings! Specifically, the Vintage Inspired Turquoise and Diamond Stacking Ring, Orange Blossom RingTiniest Diamond Eternity Band, and The Essential Band!

For Chelsey, it would be the Vintage Inspired Turquoise and Diamond Stacking Ring as well 😉

JESSICA + AUSTIN’S STORY

They met in 9th grade and now, 14 years later, are soon-to-be-wed. We are honored to have designed their rings and are so excited to share their tale. Read on for the ultimate high school sweethearts story, starring Jessica and Austin!

Names: Jessica Plotkin & Austin Kay

Current location: Scottsdale, AZ

Meeting date + location: Long Island, NY – 2008

Wedding date + location: March 11, 2022 – Scottsdale, AZ

How did you lovebirds meet?

9th grade earth science class!

The proposal – please tell us the story!

With all of the changes COVID brought, Austin and I decided it was best to move from Santa Monica to Scottsdale to be closer to family. We set a moving date of December 30, and with all of our holiday plans, the weekend before Thanksgiving was likely the last full weekend we’d have together in Santa Monica. To celebrate, Austin said we should watch the sunset in Malibu and get dinner at one of our favorite spots, Moonshadows, afterward. This didn’t seem out of the ordinary by any means, so I went with it. (Funny story: Austin said that we should have champagne at sunset. I told him to “put the bottle of Veuve on ice” and with that, he put the bottle of champagne in the freezer and forgot about it until we were about to leave. I told him not to worry about it and said I’m fine with vodka. He looked at me with fear and ran to our local Vons to grab a new bottle of Veuve. Now I realize the last thing he wanted was for me to have a few vodka sodas before our proposal!!) Austin pulled off the perfect surprise sunset proposal at Point Dume on 11/20/20.

When did you know that your significant other was the one?

Jess: Immediately – 9th grade. I swear I told a classmate I was going to marry him. Austin wasn’t so sure about it then!

Austin: Senior year of high school (Jess note: See, I told you it took longer…)

Jessica and Austin at Prom, 2011

What is your favorite thing about your significant other?

Jess: He balances me. He’s literally the calm to my storm. Austin is such a go-with-the-flow kind of person and genuinely always has a smile on his face.

Austin: She makes me a better person. She is extremely loving and caring. She is always looking out for my best interest.

What has COVID taught you about each other/relationships? Did you learn anything about your SO?

We’d be lying if we said COVID didn’t put a strain on our relationship at times – working and living together in a 500 sq. ft. apartment with a new puppy can do that to you. But we got engaged during the middle of a quarantine, so that should say something!

Do you have any notable stories that have stood out over the years – hilarious, sentimental, anything!

Jess: I decided to shoot my shot with Austin after getting his number from a mutual friend. “Hi it’s Jess from earth science :)” was the text. After not getting a response for a day, I sent the exact same message again. He did end up responding, but how embarrassing!?

What’s your go-to date night idea?

Drinks and dinner at a new local restaurant. But we always try to sit at the bar – that’s where the fun people are!

Jessica’s custom Annika engagement ring

Let’s talk jewels – how did you choose this ring?! Who took the reigns on designing your ring? Do you looove? Give us all the deets.

Jess: Austin picked everything! I had absolutely no idea this was going on. It is my dream ring x a million.

Austin: I always knew what I wanted to get her, but I wanted it to be a complete surprise. I love the simplicity of the Annika, but I knew I wanted to wow her with the diamond. I was constantly in communication with Sofia and Karina throughout the entire process.

How is wedding planning going? What are you most excited about for your wedding?

We’re almost done! Just about 40 days away. Wedding planning during COVID has been difficult, but we can’t wait for our weekend! We have three days of events planned. We’re most excited about having our families and friends together in one room. It means the world to us that they would travel from New York to Arizona, especially during such a crazy time.

Alright – so what does the future hold for the two of you?! Where do you see yourselves in 10 years? 20?

We just bought land and are building our very first home together! We should be moved in within a year or so. Hopefully, we’ll raise our kids here for a while and then eventually make our way back to California – that’s always been our dream!

Finally, if you could add any piece to your SKFJ collection, which one would it be?

Jess’s dream wedding band is in the works right now! It’s a custom ring that Sofia designed with us, and we cannot wait to see it come to life. Austin will also be wearing a SKFJ band – the Raw Textured Band in matte white gold. He’s had his eye on that one since we got engaged.
